Put an extra helping of soul in your next Nashville breakfast

Posted by Dane on February 29th, 2008

Dora saw Juno. I don’t know where the heck I was. And now that she’s seen it I guess I have to wait until it comes out on DVD. Unless it’s a big movie I sort of prefer that anyway.

But today I’m here to talk about breakfast! We used to go out a lot for it but have gotten out of the habit. I don’t know why. But this past Saturday we were out doing errands and passed the Loveless Café over on Hwy 100 and decided to stop.

I went there probably 10 years ago but man I guess I forgot. That is a good breakfast! It’s a little out of the way but if you’re nearby you shouldn’t deny yourself their biscuits, which they serve with their incredible peach preserves. Or their country ham or their “red-eye” gravy.

Listen up Oscar – Juno was really the best movie!

Posted by Jennifer on February 27th, 2008

I know Juno didn’t win the Oscar, but it should’ve! It is so great and so cute! Andrew and I saw it last night. If you haven’t gone yet you have to. The girl who plays Juno is perfect. And the one kid from Superbad who plays her boyfriend is really good too.

I love movies that make me laugh and cry. I hate them if they have a lot of blood or violence, and definitely not where any animals are hurt in it. But this was just a sweet story about this girl who gets pregnant and is trying hard to figure out what to do and who she is.

Oh, and her parents are great, too! The man who plays her Dad definitely should’ve got nominated. Anyway, if you’re looking for a movie that will make you feel good when it’s over see Juno.

Forget country stars, how about a visit to Jack Daniels’ home

Posted by Dane on February 25th, 2008

A reader just reminded me that there’s also a tour that takes you out to see the Jack Daniels Distillery. I haven’t been on that one I’m afraid. I guess I prefer thinking they make their whiskey with some kind of magic.

But I can see where people might want to see how they do it, see the process in action. And I’m assuming there are probably a few samples here and there to keep things interesting.

Plus, Lynchburg is a nice little town. And you’ll get to see some of the Tennessee countryside on your way out there from Nashville. It really is beautiful country, especially if you’re here in the springtime.

I forgot to ask the guy if they give you a deal on bottles in the gift shop. That would be good to know…

See you later,
Dane

See how the other half lives on a tour of Nashville stars’ homes

Posted by Dane on February 22nd, 2008

You haven’t heard of the NashTrash tour? Oh, Jennifer, Jennifer, Jennifer. It’s got to be 10 years old. Dora went with some girlfriends about five years ago. She convinced me to go, and I have to say it was pretty darn hilarious. Those ladies have got their act down.

If you’re looking to do a tour while you’re here, or if you’re a local and have never even heard of it, I recommend the Tennessee History Tour, which takes you out to Belle Meade Plantation and The Hermitage.

If you’re more a country fan than history buff, do one of Nashville Homes of the Stars tours. We took my sister on this one. You hit Alan Jackson’s house, Brooks and Dunn, Ronnie Milsap, Dolly Parton, and others I can’t remember. It’s a good day out. Some incredible houses.

Cheers,
Dane

Maybe it’s time to put a little trash in your next visit to Nashville

Posted by Jennifer on February 20th, 2008

I wonder sometimes if we give better ideas for stuff to do in Nashville or if our guests do. I was telling this woman from Atlanta that my aunt and cousins are coming to town and she said we had to go on the NashTrash tour.

Have you heard of it? I hadn’t. But after looking on the Internet it seems like maybe I’m the only one! Different places rank it as one of the best things to do in Nashville. One site said it was THE best!

So I think we’re going to do it. It’s 90 minutes and is run by these two comedian ladies who call themselves the Jugg Sisters. I guess they run you all over town in a pink bus as they tell these stories about country stars you’re not going hear other places.

I was just glad to hear you can bring your own cocktails on board!:-)

It’s always the right time to get a new pair of shoes!

Posted by Jennifer on February 18th, 2008

Happy Shoe Day everybody! What, it’s not on your calendar? OK, I made it up!:-) But it should be a national holiday! At least once a month you need to be nice to your feet. They work so hard for you!

Shoes. I can’t lie, even writing it I get all excited! So, Shoe Day means that today I’m leaving early to hit my favorite stores. (I really need a new pair of boots, but I’m flexible…) Here are my favorites:

1. Rangoni of Florence – This store at the Mall of Green Hills is full of the most beautiful everything. I love Italian shoes!
2. Shoe Boutique – Probably my favorite North Nashville spot. I bought two pairs of House of Dereons there last time.
3. Posh Shoes – For really unique stuff you won’t find other places try this spot on 21st Ave. S.

Now that’s taking a nice walk, Dane!:-)

Come for the half naked lady, stay for the music and drinks…

Posted by Dane on February 15th, 2008

It’s true, how in the world did we miss mentioning the Pink Slip? Because I have to agree you’re not going to find another place like it. Not in Nashville anyway. It’s got this sort of what I imagine is a New York feel. Really modern, with art, cool furniture, creative cocktails.

Dora and I go sometimes to see the music. They get some real talented people to perform there. And it’s a good place for it too because it’s small enough that you can get up close and personal.

But definitely the thing everyone is talking about is the, what would you call it ― the living art? Imagine one of those large fish tanks you see at Chinese restaurants. And then imagine a pretty blonde woman sitting in it. You’ve never seen anything like it.

Cheers,
Dane

Get it on one of Hotel Preston’s special offers this Valentine’s Day!

Posted by Jennifer on February 13th, 2008

OK, one more thing about the Pink Slip. Sorry. I can’t help it! Since I forgot to mention the bar before, now I want to make sure I don’t forget anything else!

So, OK, whether you’ve been to the Pink Slip or not, right now it’s part of a special overnight package we’re having at Hotel Preston called Music Makers and Booty Shakers. Ha!

It includes a voucher for the Pink Slip, a Nashville Underground CD, the latest issue of American Songwriters magazine and Nashville nightclub passes for you to live it up on the town. Plus a late checkout.

Do I have to remind you guys that Valentine’s Day is tomorrow! Actually there’s another special overnight offer for that! :-) It’s called Cupid Gone Wild and has champagne, chocolate-covered strawberries, body dust, bubble bath and a late check-out!

Want to see something you’ve never seen before at a bar?

Posted by Jennifer on February 12th, 2008

Thanks to you guys who are keeping up with Hotel Preston better than I am! Jeez. Yes, you’ve got to visit our bar, the Pink Slip. Seriously. If you’ve been there, you know what I’m talking about.

I’m sorry it took someone sending me the story on Tennessean.com to remind me that hey we hadn’t mentioned it at all on our blog yet! That’s just crazy. You just have to see it to understand. (Tennessean.com has a video.)

What’s the big deal? Well, what other bar do you know that is attached to a glass room that a woman sits in (in a pink slip!) watching TV, talking on the phone or whatever? Don’t say some other place because I’m sure we’re the only one!

I’ll keep you updated because I have a feeling there’s going to be more to report from there.

Going green: Fighting the winter blahs with a couple of good walks

Posted by Dane on February 11th, 2008

I don’t’ know about you, but I’m spending way too much time inside these days. Watching TV, puttering around the house. The other day I realized I was just staring out the window. Time to get outside.

It also occurred to me that if you’re in town for just a few days, it can be good to break from all the sightseeing. So here are our two favorite spots for a stroll:

1. In town: Shelby Bottoms – These are paved trails, and sections take you right along the Cumberland. It can be busy on weekends.
2. Just out of town: Radnor Lake – It’s got all kinds of great trails throughout. If you’re looking for a workout hike up to Ganier Ridge.

Strolling from honky tonk to honky tonk on Music Row is a different sort of workout, too. Just different wildlife.

See ya,
Dane
