Next I want to meet triplets from New Mexico!

Posted by Jennifer on February 8th, 2008

As of yesterday I can now cross Alaska off my list of states that I’ve met people from at Hotel Preston! Actually, there were two firsts. My first Alaskans and the first set of twins I’ve checked in.

They were twin boys, and so cute. Both wore matching Seahawks hoodies. I told them they needed to get some Titans stuff when they were in town but their mom said it’s only Seahawks, everything Seahawks.

One idea they did like was I told them they should hit the Adventure Science Center if they had time. It’s mostly geared toward kids and has all kinds of really cool interactive exhibits. I took Andrew’s nephew there once and he still talks about it.

The best part about that trip was when we got him home, he totally crashed. I was thinking, hey now we can watch a movie, but then I fell asleep, too.

    TTFN!

You just can’t keep the Belcourt Theater down!

Posted by Dane on February 6th, 2008

The Belcourt Theater is actually a fascinating place all on its own. If you’re from Nashville, you probably know it. But you might not know much about its history.

First off, the place is more than 75 years old. It opened in 1925 as the Hillsboro Theatre, and worked as a silent movie house. During the 30s it was used by both the Children’s Theatre of Nashville and guess who else? The Grand Ole Opry.

In 1937, the Hillsboro was renamed the Nashville Community Playhouse and did both film and theater stuff. It became the Belcourt Cinema in 1966, but then went through some tough times thanks to mall multiplexes.

Today it shows movies and has other shows and events (like the Chinese New Year celebration). It’s a city landmark, and let’s hope it’s around for a long time to come.

    See you later,

Nothing says you’re in the South like … gourmet popsicles?

Posted by Dane on February 4th, 2008

“How could you forget the popsicle place? That’s the place to go for dessert.” Straight from Dora’s lips to your screen. Thanks, dear.

Las Paletas really is a great spot and unlike any other place you’ll go to. Makes me wish for summer just because there’s nothing better for one of our scorcher August days than one of their grapefruit paletas (Spanish for “popsicle”).

But don’t think these are your ordinary everyday popsicles like the kind you had as a kid. Not even close. These are made by two sisters from Mexico who are popsicle experts. They’ve created all kinds of flavors including crazy ones like avocado, cucumber and chocolate wasabi.

It can be hard to find (unless they have a sign up now). So just park on 12th Ave. S. and ask. Dora would also want you to know that you can do some shopping around there.

    Adios!

You’ll seriously be in Hog Heaven at this popular Nashville joint

Posted by Dane on February 1st, 2008

The Dairy Dip’s strawberry shortcake (which I can vouch for) got me thinking about the homemade peach cobbler at another favorite spot of ours, Hog Heaven on 27th Ave. N. by Centennial Park (look for the white shack). It’s another locals’ joint.

I’ll go in reverse because dessert doesn’t get any better than Hog Heaven cobbler with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top! Now, I’m more your peach man, but you can’t go wrong with the blackberry either. Just don’t forget that ice cream.

The only problem of course is setting aside room. Because the bbq here really is first rate. Unlike many Tennessee bbq places, it not only has pork, chicken, and ribs, but also serves turkey and a delicious beef brisket. And that doesn’t even count the sides!

    I guess it’s time for lunch…

    See you later,
    Dane
