This bachelorette party turned the party at The Pink Slip up to 11

Posted by Sabrina on October 3rd, 2008

We had a bachelorette party come into the The Pink Slip last night and everyone is still talking about it. Those were some crazy girls. They were actually pretty well behaved, but they did end up forgetting one girl and had to come back!

They did it in a smart way, though. They rented a limo and they were all wearing the same yellow shirt. I wish I could remember what it said! It got a lot of laughs.

But they had a good time and their limo driver even had a quick dinner in the restaurant. I thought that was cute. Like a chaperone. He was an older guy named Mort. I asked him what he thought about the whole thing and he said he thought his wife was loud. Ha!

Someone please save me from my Sudoku obsession!

Posted by Sabrina on October 1st, 2008

I’m doing this post today because I had to break away from the Sudoku in today’s paper! I’m addicted to that stupid game! My mom is totally hooked and has been saying to me for forever that because I like numbers I’d like it. Now I can’t stop.

I actually keep them under the counter at the front. Shhh. But the other day a guest caught me, and then admitted that she loved them too! She even had an electronic version in her purse. She said she actually kind of looked forward to lines at the bank now! Ha!

I’m actually more of an expert at the game where you find the differences between the two pictures. Don’t ask me how. It’s just a talent.  Now if I could just find a way to use that skill for something, right?

    See ya,

It’s a small world after all and getting smaller every day

Posted by Dane on September 30th, 2008

Here’s one I’ve never had before at the hotel. Today, I met a man and his wife who came all the way from Ghana in West Africa. I thought he said Guyana, which created a lot of confusion at first.

It’s amazing to me. I told him it really is a small world that people from Africa should come all the way to my home town in Nashville. And he said that it is getting smaller every day, which seems so true these days.

The man’s name is Kofi, which he explained means he was born on Friday. All kids get a name based on the day of the week they are born. I asked if that isn’t confusing when his mom would call you in for dinner. Doesn’t every other Kofi turn his head? He said it’s probably their dinnertime, too.

Dead Poets Society and couple of things I learned from Google

Posted by Dane on September 5th, 2008

Just saw the movie “Dead Poets Society” last night. Robin Williams. You’ve probably all seen it already but I never did. What a really well done movie I thought. Robin Williams was great.

I Googled it later and learned something I didn’t know. The movie was written by a Nashvillian named Tom Schulman who graduated from Vanderbilt! And supposedly he wrote it about a Vandy professor named John Lachs.

So I Googled some more and found out that that’s a myth and that he apparently based it on his experiences at the Montgomery Bell Academy, a prep school in Nashville. The real teacher is named Sam Pickering who now teaches in the University of Connecticut.

Just in case you see the movie again…

One week in the life of a Hotel Preston bellman/shuttle driver

Posted by Dane on August 13th, 2008

One of the things I really love about my job is the people I get a chance to meet every day. We get the most interesting people coming through Hotel Preston. I just watched the movie High Fidelity the other night (great movie) and so I’ll give you a list of my top three guests I met last week.

    1.  A woman from Atlanta who is apparently a pretty famous tattoo artist. She was in town to do a class. She had a tattoo on her arm of Route 66 that was incredible.

    2.  Twins from Toronto who were both dentists and both married to women named Valerie. How confusing was that?

    3.  A cop from Daytona Beach who had the best handlebar mustache I’ve ever seen and let me park his Harley.

And that’s just one week. Beat that.
